The
Seed Storehouse
There the seeds lay; dry and cool and
protected from the elements in the storehouse. All of the farmers made sure
that after they planted their crops, they took the seeds that were leftover
from the harvest and stored them in a safe place so that they could be used for
next year’s planting and still have some saved for a sensible surplus.
No one knew how terrible the storm brewing in the ocean would be. It
grew to a monstrous size and slowly made its way toward the fields. Some
people fled, some people stayed. Then the day that they would remember forever
came.
Water flowed in a surge that overwhelmed the people’s territory.
Water flooded the area so much that everyone’s house was filled with water.
All of their pictures and furniture and clothing were soaked in water. Some of
the people died.
Many months went by and things were never what they
used to be before. Everyone thought the seeds were safe, but the water took
the seeds and spread them over all the land until they settled in places that
they never would have known before.
The seeds that landed by the ocean buried themselves in the sand and took
comfort under the shade of the beautiful Palms that lived there. Before long,
they started to grow. The Palms were not accustomed to these new unusual
plants growing there. They had never seen them before and didn’t quite know
what to do. Some of the Palms rejected them and leaned themselves away from
them toward the sea. Some of the others lifted their leaves and shaded them
from the heat of the sun. Some of them died, some of them
thrived.
Another group of seeds were spread amongst the inland Oaks.
The Oaks had been there for a long time. Nothing had changed for them for many
centuries. Then, all of a sudden, there were these new plants growing in their
midst. Most of the Oaks panicked. They used their leaves and their limbs to
try to keep the saplings from growing up there. Only the strongest of them
survived.
Some of the seeds were scattered all the way across town to
where the Myrtles and Maples live. Only some of the plants really want to live
there. The train tracks run right through the center of town. Sometimes the
Myrtles are so tired from work that they just go to sleep when they get home.
There is not much food to go around. The seeds started to grow up around them.
The Myrtles feared that what little they had might be taken away from them.
Most of the seeds contributed to the neighborhood. Other bad seeds took
advantage of the Maples and took from them when they weren’t looking. The
Maples never appreciated the seeds. In fact, they just didn’t like
them.
Most of the seeds landed in the Pine forest. The Pines had worked
hard for many years alongside the Oaks and Myrtles. They earned the right to
plant their orchard wherever they wanted, even if it was far away from the
forest. When the seeds started to settle around them, they simply moved
farther away.
The rest of the seeds are settling still.
